The Challenge
The company is transitioning its IT focus and spend to the cloud for greater flexibility and business agility. Part of this transition includes a cloud storage and collaboration strategy based on Box, which will ultimately support more than 180,000 users. As the company transitioned to Box, IT needed a way to prevent personal health information (PHI) from being uploaded into Box and in general, to police content to have visibility and create audit trails for data. Protecting patient privacy and data is a core tenet for the company and so the goal was to enable employees while still staying secure and compliant. Part of the difficulty was also implementing this across any app or device for employees in real-time.
About The Customer
The company is one of the US’ largest healthcare providers, serving over 9 million members. Among the innovations the company has brought to U.S. health care are prepaid health plans, physician group practices, a focus on preventive care, and an organized healthcare delivery system. The company is transitioning its IT focus and spend to the cloud for greater flexibility and business agility. Part of this transition includes a cloud storage and collaboration strategy based on Box, which will ultimately support more than 180,000 users.
The Solution
Using Netskope for Box, IT was able to address all use cases and concerns with PHI and securing employee collaboration and file sharing. The company gained real-time activity- and data-level control and PHI detection in Box across any browser, native app, and mobile app. Based on this visibility, IT can now quarantine (for evaluation by admins) and/or encrypt files as files get uploaded into Box. And due to Netskope’s tight integration with Box, IT was able to identify pre-existing data in the corporate Box instance to retroactively apply data loss prevention (DLP) and quarantine rules to sensitive PHI data. This level of granularity allowed the company to secure data and coach users to compliance with company and regulatory policies.
Operational Impact
  • Secure adoption of Box for all employees, across all devices
  • Real-time activity- and data-level control and PHI detection in Box across any browser, native app, and mobile app
  • Ability to quarantine (for evaluation by admins) and/or encrypt files as files get uploaded into Box
Quantitative Benefit
  • Support for more than 180,000 users
  • Real-time maintenance mode, discovering content as it’s being uploaded and taking action accordingly
