The Challenge
i-sense, an Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration (IRC) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), aims to build digital sensing systems to identify and prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. However, they faced a challenge in interpreting the daily or weekly data related to the COVID-19 pandemic response published by Public Health England, National Health Service (NHS), and the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The data was often difficult to understand, making it challenging to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in place.
About The Customer
i-sense started in October 2013 as a five-year, £11M Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration (IRC), funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). In 2018, i-sense received Next Steps funding from the EPSRC for a further four years of research. i-sense aims to build a new generation of digital sensing systems to identify and prevent outbreaks of infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance, much earlier than ever before. Early detection and accurate diagnosis is key to helping patients gain faster access to care and protecting populations from disease.
The Solution
To address this challenge, researchers from i-sense developed a dashboard to evaluate the performance of the 'Find, Test, Trace, Isolate, Support' system. They achieved this by collating publicly available data into a single place. The dashboard includes two interactive maps. The first map shows the estimated percentage of the total population testing positive, while the second displays symptom reports to the NHS from the last seven days by location. This solution was made possible with mapping support from the CARTO Grants for Good program. Governments and corporate organizations are using Google Cloud Platform with CARTO to create intuitive dashboards in the cloud.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the dashboard developed by i-sense researchers has significantly improved the understanding and interpretation of COVID-19 data. The interactive maps provide a clear visual representation of the spread of the virus, enabling quick identification of new outbreaks and facilitating measures to reduce transmission. The use of Google Cloud Platform with CARTO has allowed for the creation of intuitive dashboards in the cloud, enhancing data-driven decision-making processes. This has been fundamental in planning returns to the workplace, running PPE supply chains, and in economic recovery use cases.
