The Challenge
LTE group faced significant challenges with their existing McAfee endpoint security solution, which failed to prevent a security breach that caused rolling downtime for 1,000 employees and several thousand students over two weeks. The breach disrupted Skype VoIP deployment, leading to poor quality of phone and video conversations and remote video-based training. Additionally, McAfee's peer-to-peer broadcasting caused network issues, and despite identifying the problem, McAfee couldn't resolve it. Dissatisfied with the breach and high number of threats missed by McAfee, LTE's IT team evaluated alternatives, including Sophos, Cylance, Microsoft Windows Defender, and Bitdefender solutions, ultimately selecting Bitdefender GravityZone.
About The Customer
LTE group is a prominent provider of quality learning, training, and employment opportunities across the U.K. With a workforce of 5,000 colleagues and over 100,000 learners, LTE Group offers a wide range of services, including continuing education, professional training courses, apprenticeships, and work-based training. Headquartered in Manchester, England, LTE Group is dedicated to delivering exceptional educational and training services to its diverse clientele. The Solution
LTE group implemented Bitdefender GravityZone to protect 6,000 Microsoft Windows and Apple workstations, with plans to extend coverage to an additional 4,000 workstations. Bitdefender also safeguards LTE group's 600 VMware ESXi virtual servers, 1,750 VMware Horizon View virtual desktops, 70 physical Windows and Linux servers, and 7,000 Microsoft Exchange mailboxes. The solution includes device control to block USB devices on both Windows and Mac endpoints, automated exceptions, and content filtering. GravityZone's seamless integration with VMware NSX enables agentless security, improving performance by running resource-intensive security tasks on a dedicated security server rather than individual virtual machines.
Operational Impact
  • Since deploying Bitdefender GravityZone, LTE group has experienced zero security incidents over the last 18 months, consistently blocking hundreds of threats daily.
  • The IT team has significantly more time available as GravityZone automates security tasks, eliminating the need for manual intervention and cleanup after infections.
  • Security-related trouble calls have decreased from about 150 to less than 50 on average per month, allowing the small IT team to focus on other critical tasks.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Zero security incidents over the last 18 months since deployment.
  • Reduced time to perform full scans to 20-30 minutes compared to one hour or more.
  • Cut virtual desktop login and response times by 30 percent.
