The Challenge
The BNP Paribas IT team faced two major challenges. First, they needed to migrate customer data from a newly acquired bank into their central core banking system within a narrow time frame. This involved not only moving large volumes of data but also ensuring data integrity through a reconciliation process. The second challenge was to develop a new architecture to support their Internet banking initiative without disrupting the already reliable core banking systems. This required high performance and scalability to meet customer expectations for online banking services.
About The Customer
BNP Paribas is a French international banking group and one of the largest banks in the world by total assets. Formed by the merger of Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) and Paribas in 2000, it operates in 72 countries and serves more than 30 million customers in its three domestic markets of France, Belgium, and Italy. The bank has both retail and investment banking operations and operates in the western United States as Bank of the West and in Poland as the BGZ Group. The IT team in Poland is largely self-sufficient and supports retail, corporate investment, and central banking operations.
The Solution
The BNP Paribas IT team implemented Hazelcast to address their challenges. For the data migration project, Hazelcast was used as a fast operational data store in a cluster of 16 machines, each with 8 cores and 20 GB of RAM. This setup allowed them to perform the migration within the expected time window. For the Internet banking project, Hazelcast was used as a modern caching solution to provide data from core banking systems to frontend developers. This ensured high performance and minimal impact on core systems. Data synchronization was handled through Hazelcast, ensuring real-time data availability.
Operational Impact
  • The data migration project was completed over a weekend, minimizing the impact on daily operations and meeting the service-level agreement (SLA).
  • The reconciliation process was greatly accelerated, reducing the time from 4 hours to 20 minutes using Hazelcast.
  • The Internet banking project exceeded performance expectations, providing significantly better results than anticipated.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The reconciliation process time was reduced from 4 hours to 20 minutes.
  • The migration data cluster had a total of 130 GB allocated across 16 machines.
  • The Internet banking system handled 10 million events per day with Hazelcast.
