The Challenge
Milaap, South Asia’s largest crowdfunding platform for personal causes and healthcare emergencies, faced a significant challenge in effectively engaging its donor community. The platform, which has transformed the way India gives to those in need, needed a more efficient way to communicate with its donors, 60% of whom are based in India. The existing communication channels, SMS and email, had relatively low delivery and open rates, which hindered Milaap's ability to drive traffic to the platform and increase donations. To overcome this challenge, Milaap required a digital messaging solution that could facilitate fast, secure, two-way communication and had wide consumer adoption in India.
About The Customer
Milaap is the largest crowdfunding platform in South Asia, focusing on personal causes and healthcare emergencies. With a community of over 300,000 donors spanning more than 130 countries, Milaap has contributed to over 250,000 causes across India. The platform allows anyone to create a fundraiser for free and provides campaign management tools to promote their project. Milaap is headquartered in Bangalore and is revolutionizing the way India supports those in need, from responding to the Chennai and Kerala floods to the global pandemic.
The Solution
Milaap adopted the WhatsApp Business Platform, powered by Infobip, to enhance its donor messaging. WhatsApp, being the fastest-growing channel in India, was an ideal choice for Milaap. The platform offered several benefits including real-time rich notifications, two-way customer-initiated conversations, and integration with major payment gateways for secure donations. It also brought efficiency and automation to campaign management through conversation flows and templates. Infobip designed a customized communication solution tailored to Milaap’s requirements and use cases. This included facilitating key activities across the donor user journey such as easy onboarding, secure donations, real-time alerts, ongoing campaign content, campaign sharing, and customer-initiated conversations.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the WhatsApp Business Platform has significantly transformed Milaap's fundraising communications. The platform has not only improved the efficiency and interactivity of donor messaging but also enhanced the security of the donation process. The ability to share campaigns amongst friends and family easily has expanded the reach of fundraising campaigns. Furthermore, the platform has facilitated real-time alerts and ongoing campaign content, keeping donors updated and engaged. The solution has also enabled customer-initiated, two-way conversations, improving the overall donor experience.
Quantitative Benefit
  • WhatsApp now drives a quarter of all traffic to the Milaap platform.
  • Milaap fundraising projects typically receive twice the amount of donations when shared via WhatsApp.
  • The WhatsApp solution has led to a clear uplift in user engagement, click-through rates, and gross dollar volume (GDV) payments.
