The Challenge
Salander LLC, a leader in technological applications for work zone management for over 15 years, was tasked with a work zone management project in Minneapolis. The project required a smart work zone technology solution to monitor live travel time of work zone traffic. The main concern was to lessen the impact of the construction zone on commuters by providing live, accurate travel time information to efficiently navigate travelers through the zone.
About The Customer
Salander LLC is a company that has been providing Intelligent Work Zone technology for more than 15 years. Their vision includes developing and positioning technology for safety, mobility, efficiency, and communications for all work zones, regardless of the transportation medium. In 2017, their successes were acknowledged by ITS Heartland, being honored with the title “Best in ITS” (Intelligent Transportation Solutions). Salander LLC is known for its innovative approach to work zone management and its commitment to improving the safety and efficiency of work zones.
The Solution
SMATS Traffic Solutions provided the real-time, WiFi & Bluetooth traffic sensors and data analytics platform needed for the project. The SMATS TrafficXHub™ sensors can detect both WiFi and Bluetooth signals and calculate live travel time and origin-destination data. This data is automatically synced to SMATS' web analytics platform, iNode™, through GSM communication. iNode™ features MAC address matching and outlier filtering running in real-time to ensure the most accurate information is available. The sensors are easy to install, adjustable for any duration, and data is easily accessible remotely through iNode™.
Operational Impact
  • With the installation of SMATS TrafficXHub™ sensors, a smart work zone system was created. Fifteen sensors were installed to populate Variable Message Signs (VMS) along the affected roadways in Minneapolis.
  • Salander established 22 links and 7 routes in the zone to monitor traffic flow.
  • The travel time data extracted from the iNode™ API was used to populate the 10 VMS within the north metro work zone, displaying comparative alternative-route travel time to affected motorists.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Fifteen sensors were installed to monitor the work zone.
  • Twenty-two links and seven routes were established in the zone.
  • Ten Variable Message Signs (VMS) were used to display travel time data.
