The Challenge
The energy utility company had a gap in performance visibility for their VMware vSphere and ExpressRoute to Azure. They needed to assure the performance of applications and services at substations. The company had implemented NETSCOUT nGenius Enterprise Performance Management to ensure performance and availability of critical applications. However, visibility concerns included their VMware vSphere virtualized environment and around their firewall access points. Both areas seemed to have performance issues regularly and required visibility that could be shared with vendors and security for better, faster collaboration around the problems. Additionally, as they had adopted Office 365 for business services, they experienced a gap in performance visibility which made troubleshooting user problems a challenge.
About The Customer
The company provides electrical power and natural gas to millions of customers across multiple states in North America. They are committed to delivering reliable energy and superior customer service to their customers with the support of thousands of employees. They are also focused on achieving sustainability milestones and green energy initiatives in their quest to be a top efficiency provider. Their investments and projects in a clean energy future range from solar, offshore wind, and electric vehicles. With a highly distributed environment that stretches from data centers and contact centers to road crews and substations, their enterprise network and applications are strategic parts of their corporate operations and success.
The Solution
NETSCOUT nGenius Enterprise Performance Management solution was implemented in several areas of the utility’s enterprise network and was supported by a NETSCOUT Premium Services Engineer (PSE) for deployment and set up as well as dashboard, reporting, and workflow configurations. nGeniusONE, leveraging deep packet analysis at scale from the distributed InfiniStreamNG (ISNG) appliances in strategic locations, was providing performance management data on their mission-critical applications. In addition to ISNGs deployed around their firewalls at the internet switch links (ISLs), for real-time performance monitoring of the north-south traffic in the physical network, the NetOps team also added vSTREAM appliances in their VMware vSphere environment for east-west traffic monitoring in the virtualized environment, as well as visibility into the Azure ExpressRoute connections for performance monitoring of their Office 365 applications. This approach removed blind spots in the power company’s comprehensive performance management strategy.
Operational Impact
  • The company is able to safeguard physical and virtual threats better using the NETSCOUT solutions.
  • Monitoring and ensuring performance of voice, card reader applications, and surveillance video traffic coming from their substations to the data centers is helping protect critical, physical entities for the power company.
  • The additional cybersecurity coverage provided by AED is protecting valuable infrastructure technology to help them “keep the lights on.”
Quantitative Benefit
  • Lower MTTR for problem resolution in virtualized and SaaS environments
  • Single platform for performance, availability, and security reduces tool clutter and complexity while improving cross-functional collaboration
