The Challenge
Boskalis faced significant challenges in managing and analyzing its business processes due to the reliance on a data warehouse and numerous Excel reports. The complexity and time-consuming nature of these methods made it difficult to track and report lead times for the Purchase-to-Pay (P2P) process. The company recognized the need for a more efficient and transparent way to manage its processes and communicate performance to stakeholders. This led to the decision to explore process mining technologies to gain better insights and control over their operations.
About The Customer
Boskalis is an international maritime infrastructure service provider headquartered in Papendrecht, the Netherlands. The company operates one of the world's largest dredging fleets and has a presence in over 90 countries. With a workforce of over 11,700 employees, Boskalis serves a diverse range of clients, including oil, gas, and wind energy companies, port operators, governments, and shipping companies. The company is involved in high-profile projects such as the expansion of the Suez Canal, land reclamation in Panama City, and the construction of offshore wind parks like Veja Mate in the North Sea.
The Solution
In 2016, Boskalis implemented Celonis Process Mining to gain end-to-end transparency of its business processes. The technology was introduced to help the company visualize and analyze its P2P and invoicing processes through clear and operable dashboards. The implementation process involved extracting data from the InforLN and Basware systems and connecting SAP P2P and SAP SIM data using standard extraction queries and dashboards from Celonis. This approach allowed Boskalis to quickly build and extend dashboards for daily monitoring and control of processes. The company also initiated an internal 'road show' to demonstrate the benefits of Celonis to key stakeholders and improve data-driven decision-making across various departments.
Operational Impact
  • Improved communication about processes and bottlenecks, laying the foundation for process improvement activities.
  • Enhanced collaboration between the central procurement department, Financial Shared Services Centre, and other business units to optimize end-to-end processes.
  • Reduced invoicing lead times and analyzed purchase order compliance, leading to more efficient operations.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Achieved 100% transparency in business processes.
  • Reduced lead times for invoicing processes.
  • Improved compliance with purchase orders.
