The Challenge
Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) utilizes a variety of development software across its departments, including CAE, CAD, and others. These software tools are essential for the engineers' daily work and are retrieved from a large software license pool within the company. However, managing this process efficiently became a challenge for the TMG IT department. They needed a system to monitor software license usage to understand when and how often each license was used. This information was crucial for the management team to understand the actual demand for software within the company, identify areas where licenses were needed, and determine if the company owned more licenses of a certain software type than actually required.
About The Customer
Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, specializing in motorsport and automotive technology development. TMG uses a variety of development software in all of its departments, including Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and others. These software tools are integral to the engineers' daily work and are retrieved from a large software license pool within the company. The IT department at TMG is responsible for managing this process and ensuring efficient use of software licenses.
The Solution
To address this challenge, TMG implemented Altair’s Software Asset Optimization (SAO) system. The SAO system provides easy and efficient access to the actual software usage of existing licenses within the company. It allows the user to analyze software usage and make informed decisions regarding the acquisition of new licenses and the extension of existing contracts. The SAO system generates reports on software usage across the entire company based on information from the vendor license server. It also enables the creation of alert dashboards/notifications and detailed user reports. This system can answer critical questions such as why and where a certain software is used, who uses it, how much is paid for its usage, and who should be charged for it.
Operational Impact
  • With the implementation of Altair’s Software Asset Optimization (SAO) system, TMG has gained precise insights into the usage and need of software within the company. The system's reports enable the management to make informed decisions regarding the acquisition or extension of software licenses. It also helps identify when a new investment in a certain software type is not profitable. This approach has allowed TMG to consolidate its software expenses, as it is now clearly documented how often and by how many users the software is actually used.
