The Challenge
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) was faced with the challenge of managing over 30,000 signs spread across more than 600 centerline miles of highway. The task of ensuring that the latest and best information was always available on this large inventory of signs was daunting. The PTC needed a system that could not only manage the sign inventory but also create work requests, interface with a third-party work order processing system, and keep the data on the signs current for better decision making. The challenge was further compounded by the need to capture and store more than 50 attributes for each sign.
About The Customer
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is a state agency responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a toll highway system in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The PTC oversees more than 600 centerline miles of highway and manages over 30,000 signs. The PTC resource team involved in this project included Key Stakeholder Eric Halen, IT Project Manager Bob Hibbert, and Project Manager for the Project Management Office Brad Wastler.
The Solution
PTC adopted the AgileAssets Sign Manager to improve the asset management of their signs. The new system allowed PTC to collect all sign imagery and capture and store more than 50 attributes for each sign. In addition to managing the sign inventory, the AgileAssets system was used to create work requests and interface with a third-party work order processing system to turn these requests into actual work orders. Once a work order was completed, the interface updated relevant attributes and sign imagery in the AgileAssets system. The Sign Manager was also used to add or retire signs from the system, ensuring that the data on the signs was always current. The implementation of the solution involved a strong AgileAssets team, including Functional Analysts, Interface Developer, Trainer, and Systems Developer, and partners such as SAP Consultant, Continental Mapping Consultants, Floating Point Consultants, and DBI Construction Consultants.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the AgileAssets Sign Manager significantly improved the PTC's sign management capabilities. The system not only helped in managing the sign inventory but also facilitated the creation of work requests and their conversion into actual work orders. The interface with a third-party work order processing system ensured that the data on the signs was always current, thereby improving decision making. The system also enhanced safety and traffic flow on the turnpikes and toll roads by ensuring that the latest and best information was always available on the signs.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Improved management of over 30,000 signs
  • Ability to capture and store more than 50 attributes for each sign
  • Efficient processing of work orders through integration with a third-party system
