The Challenge
Historically, Returpack relied on 20 independent external transporters for planning and executing transport and collection activities. This approach led to a lack of visibility and control over day-to-day operations and transport costs. To increase efficiency and ensure high service levels, Returpack decided to take over transport planning themselves. They needed a solution that could handle daily operational planning, tactical development of master routes, and strategic perspectives. The solution also needed to collect and analyze data to optimize terminal locations and the collection process.
About The Customer
Returpack is Sweden's largest deposit-refund player, responsible for collecting and recycling 1.7 billion cans and bottles annually. They manage deposits for 2,700 stores across Sweden, operating with approximately 48 trucks daily. With 65 employees, Returpack operates from one factory and 24 terminals. In 2015, their turnover was 2.5 billion Swedish krona. Historically, they relied on 20 independent external transporters for transport planning and execution, which led to a lack of visibility and control over operations. To improve efficiency and service levels, Returpack decided to handle transport planning in-house.
The Solution
Returpack implemented the AMCS solution to regain control over their transport activities. The solution includes a suite of integrated modules for strategic, tactical, and operational planning. Master routes are planned in the AMCS route planning system and optimized based on recurring customer visits. These routes are then transferred to the AMCS fleet planning system for operational planning and execution. The AMCS mobile solution facilitates real-time communication between drivers and the central planning office. The system also automates payment calculations and integrates with Returpack's existing systems, such as their customer register and invoice management system.
Operational Impact
  • Returpack has regained control over their transport activities, allowing for better customer contact and service.
  • The direct communication with stores improves the customer experience, enabling immediate adjustments to plans and real-time consequence analysis.
  • The system provides a better basis for assessing bids from external transporters during the tender process.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Immediate reduction of the fleet by 2 trucks from the previous 48, with a larger reduction expected in the first year of operation.
