The Challenge
The post-production team behind the horror film IT, based on Stephen King's novel, faced the challenge of delivering a nuanced film with the right balance of horror, humor, and suspense within a tight schedule. The team needed seamless film editing and sound mixing workflows to deliver the right tone and feel to the updated horror classic. The film required a delicate balance between picture and sound, particularly in the horror genre where music and sound are crucial components used to build anticipation or evoke an emotional response. The team had to ensure that the film was as funny in parts as it was terrifying, and as sensitive as it was suspenseful.
About The Customer
The customer in this case study is the post-production team behind the horror film IT, based on Stephen King's novel. The team is composed of experienced film and sound talent, including editor Jason Ballantine and re-recording mixer Michael Keller. They were tasked with bringing the horror flick back to life, nearly 30 years after the TV miniseries. The team had to ensure that the film was a nuanced combination of real-life issues and laughs, with plenty of spine-tingling scares. They had to find the right balance and interplay between picture and sound, which is particularly crucial in the horror genre.
The Solution
The team used Avid’s creative tools and workflow solutions, including Media Composer for editing, Pro Tools Ultimate and Avid S6 console for sound mixing, and Avid shared storage. These tools provided the speed and collaborative capabilities needed to meet the challenges of the film while meeting tight deadlines. Four Media Composer workstations were moved from the Toronto shooting location to Los Angeles for post-production. The cutting room setup was maximized for workflow efficiency, facilitating the demands of the picture cut and providing creative support for the music editor, VFX editor, and assistant editors. Avid solutions were also used for the film’s sound workflow, which brought built-in advantages such as easily transferring scenes when the teams were faced with sections of the film at varying stages of completion or when multiple audience test screenings demanded quick turnarounds.
