The Challenge
The process of diagnosing autism in children has been historically plagued by subjectivity and inconsistency. The existing assessments are lengthy, require in-clinic visits, and there is a growing shortage of specialists. Furthermore, disparities in diagnosis based on socioeconomic status, race, gender, and geography have been observed. The average age of diagnosis in the U.S. is 4.3 years, and parents and caregivers often spend up to 3 years seeking answers. Early diagnosis is crucial as it can greatly alter the course of development and may even erase the signs of autism altogether.
About The Customer
Cognoa is a pediatric behavioral health company that aims to revolutionize the diagnosis of autism in children. The company has developed Canvas Dx, an FDA-authorized diagnostic device that supports clinicians in the diagnostic process. The device uses a simple app where caregivers answer questions about their child and record and upload videos of themselves interacting with the child. The child’s doctor also answers a questionnaire, and all this information is used to produce an accurate diagnosis. Cognoa plans to extend this technology to other neurodevelopmental conditions and develop further accessible diagnostic and therapeutic devices with AI and ML techniques.
The Solution
Cognoa, a pediatric behavioral health company, has developed Canvas Dx, the first FDA-authorized diagnostic device that allows healthcare providers to diagnose or rule out autism in children as young as 18 months and up to 72 months. The device is designed to support clinicians in the diagnostic process. Caregivers can get a prescription for Canvas Dx, and with a simple app, answer questions about their child and record and upload videos of themselves interacting with the child in their home environment. The child’s doctor also answers a questionnaire, and all this information produces an accurate “Positive” or “Negative” for autism. The Databricks Lakehouse Platform powers this technology. Cognoa uses the lakehouse to take in both the structured questionnaire answers as well as the unstructured videos, and then runs that data through a machine learning model to reach a diagnosis.
Operational Impact
  • The use of Canvas Dx not only provides a highly accurate diagnosis but also offers a remote diagnosis, making it more accessible to a wider range of patients. It allows for diagnosis starting at age 18 months, significantly earlier than the U.S. average age diagnosis of 4.3 years. This early diagnosis is a critical step towards early intervention for children, which can result in positive lifelong outcomes. Furthermore, the use of Databricks Lakehouse Platform allows the Cognoa team to collaborate in real time with people around the world, conduct experiments more efficiently and at scale, and create production-ready models faster, which is crucial when the well-being of children is at stake.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduces the time to diagnose autism in children by up to 3 years
  • Enables diagnosis or ruling out of autism in children as young as 18 months and up to 72 months
  • Provides remote diagnosis, eliminating the need for in-clinic visits
