The Challenge
Raycom Sports, a production and marketing company based in Charlotte, North Carolina, faced the challenge of meeting the high expectations of fans for game day broadcasts. The company, which produces live broadcasts of 140 football and basketball games for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) each year, needed to deliver an immersive, fast-paced, and entertaining experience across multiple media platforms. The challenge was not only to capture the game but also to generate compelling content from it. The increasing demand for content and the need to keep up with consumption demands required a robust and efficient technology solution. Furthermore, Raycom Sports had to manage the escalating need for storage due to the increasing content creation and the urgent requirement to preserve ACC history, which was recorded on 25,000 tapes dating back to the early 1980s.
About The Customer
Raycom Sports is a production and marketing company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company is the television broadcast partner and digital rights holder for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), producing live broadcasts of 140 football and basketball games each year. Raycom Sports also produces a studio show called the ACC Blitz, creates original programming, such as Football Saturdays, and broadcasts the Carolina Panthers pre-season. In addition, the company works with partners to produce content for the ACC digital network, website, and social media feeds, and provides access to the ACC historical archives. Raycom Sports is also responsible for preserving the ACC history, which is recorded on 25,000 tapes dating back to the early 1980s.
The Solution
Raycom Sports partnered with Avid to upgrade their sports production workflows. They used MediaCentral, Avid NEXIS, and FastServe to access, manage, and maximize media assets. The production team had 10 Media Composer clients tied into Avid’s shared storage solution. They used MediaCentral for media management, which automatically indexed the media database, AirSpeed Multi Stream to pull in live feeds of the games for digital distribution, and FastServe for ingest, edit, and playout. This enabled the production team to turn content around in seconds without having to render or transfer files. To address the storage issue, Raycom Sports upgraded from 80 terabytes of storage on four chassis with Avid ISIS to almost 200 terabytes in a single Avid NEXIS chassis. They also used the latest version of the database and more ingest channels to digitize the entire ACC archive.
Operational Impact
  • The partnership with Avid significantly improved Raycom Sports' production workflows. The use of Avid's solutions, including MediaCentral, Avid NEXIS, and FastServe, allowed Raycom Sports to efficiently manage and maximize their media assets. The shared storage solution facilitated the leveraging of assets across the organization, tying the workforces together as everyone shared the same assets. The upgrade to Avid NEXIS provided the much-needed storage space, enabling the company to handle the increasing content creation and archive digitization. The speed and efficiency of Avid's solutions allowed the editors to do more, enhancing the overall productivity. Moreover, the cohesive design of Avid's products facilitated seamless integration, creating a smooth and efficient workflow.
