The Challenge
XOX Audio Tools, a company that brings high design and advanced technologies to the musical field, was faced with the challenge of creating a completely new electric guitar that not only sounded good but also looked aesthetically pleasing. This was a significant challenge considering the lack of new ideas and features in the musical instrument field. The company wanted to create a unique design that would stand out in the market, while also ensuring that the guitar was functional and performed well. The goal was to find the ideal shape that would meet these requirements.
About The Customer
XOX Audio Tools is a company that was established in 2006 from a meeting between a musician with a background in sales and marketing, a famous product designer, and two engineering and manufacturing experts. The company brings high design and advanced technologies to the musical field to produce seductive musical instruments. They are known for their innovative approach to creating musical instruments, particularly electric guitars. Their goal is to create instruments that not only sound good but also look aesthetically pleasing.
The Solution
XOX Audio Tools used solidThinking Evolve to model the smooth organic shapes required to create a beautiful and unique design. The Handle, a revolutionary electric guitar, was conceived as a single body from which superfluous material was removed. Its concave form, thin profile, slim neck, and light weight offered a truly pleasing experience to anyone who played it. The Handle was made from carbon fiber, a material developed for the aerospace industry and used in F1 race cars. This ultra-lightweight material is incredibly resilient and will not bend or deform when subjected to high temperatures or humidity. Also, carbon fiber offers a much wider harmonic range than wood. The Evolve 3D model was directly sent to rapid prototyping for the creation of molds.
Operational Impact
  • The use of solidThinking Evolve allowed XOX Audio Tools to achieve organic modeling freedom, translating high-quality 2D curves into accurate 3D surfaces. This broadened their design exploration with the use of design history. The Evolve model was sent directly for rapid prototyping, which streamlined the production process. The design was performed entirely on an Apple Mac, demonstrating the flexibility and adaptability of the design process. Thanks to the high-quality photorealistic renderings, XOX Audio Tools could evaluate finishing alternatives and make the best choice, ensuring the final product met their high standards of aesthetics and functionality.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The Handle won several awards including the Chicago Athenaeum Museum’s Good Design Award 2006
  • The Handle was named Guitar Jam Daily’s Most Innovative Guitar of NAMM 2007
  • The Handle was awarded Best Guitar of NAMM 2008
