This program involves the collection of brush items and bulky items like appliances, mattresses, and furniture. The city uses specialized trucks for these collections and delivers the items to composting facilities or recycling centers. The collection routes are dynamic, changing daily based on resident calls, which posed a challenge for efficient route planning.
The Solution
In 2003, the City of Richardson implemented RouteSmart to optimize their BABIC routes. The GIS department collaborated with RouteSmart to build an automated routing system using the city's internal database of customer addresses. RouteSmart's Macro Language was used to feed address information into the system, allowing for automated route creation. Each evening, service calls are processed and sent to RouteSmart, which then generates optimized routes with similar runtimes and efficient sequences. The system provides turn-by-turn directions and detailed route maps for drivers, significantly improving route efficiency and reducing manual workload.
