The Challenge
The insurance company needed to ensure that its customer-focused mobile app was accurate in real-world conditions and easily updateable based on customer feedback. The existing simulation software was not delivering the necessary data, prompting the company to issue an RFP. Lionbridge responded by rewriting the RFP, highlighting critical missing elements, which led to a new partnership and significant project modifications. The goal was to test the app's performance in various real-world scenarios to ensure it met customer expectations and provided accurate data for determining insurance discounts.
About The Customer
The customer is a publicly traded insurance company, the largest insurer in America, known for integrating mobile technology into its customer experience. The company developed a mobile app that uses a small device plugged into a car's OBDII connector to gather driving data such as braking, acceleration, speed, and mileage. This data is wirelessly transmitted to the company for analysis to determine potential insurance discounts. Customers can access their driving data and its impact on premiums through a web portal. The company aims to incorporate customer feedback into app updates and improvements, ensuring a user-focused experience.
The Solution
Lionbridge took the app beyond the simulator to test it in real-world conditions. The test team, leveraging their extensive mobile phone testing experience, conducted rigorous and comprehensive tests in Boise, ID. They tested the app's performance across various carrier/mobile models by packing a van with 100 different app-equipped phones and driving through urban, suburban, and country roads. The team also conducted terrain tests in city, mountainous, and inclement weather conditions, including driving at high speeds in rainstorms and in reverse. Additionally, they tested various driving styles, including normal and emergency maneuvers, to ensure the app's robustness and reliability.
Operational Impact
  • Expanded guidance: Leveraging Lionbridge's extensive global test experience, the company delivered a better app to customers.
  • Real-world validation: The company now has a baseline of actual, not simulated, performance results.
  • User-focused outcome: Improvements included refined ratings for customer satisfaction, ensuring the app met user expectations.
