The Challenge
SAP SE, a leading enterprise applications and cloud services company, was looking to expand its offerings by launching a cloud platform to deliver SAP solutions. The goal was to create comprehensive software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings that would allow existing customers to reduce their infrastructure investments and lower barriers to entry for potential new customers. However, to meet the demand for always-available business applications, SAP needed to ensure its cloud offering would meet enterprise requirements. This meant that the platform had to be stable, secure, and highly flexible, with no margin for service interruptions or maintenance windows. As the company's cloud business was expanding rapidly, it was also crucial to use resources as efficiently as possible to realize economies of scale, increase profits, and build a sustainable SAP cloud business model.

About The Customer
SAP SE is a leading enterprise applications and cloud services company headquartered in Walldorf, Germany. The company is known for its on-premises enterprise software and was looking to expand its offerings by launching a cloud platform to deliver SAP solutions. The goal was to create comprehensive software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings that would allow existing customers to reduce their infrastructure investments and lower barriers to entry for potential new customers. SAP’s cloud business is expanding rapidly, with the business currently experiencing triple-digit growth.
The Solution
SAP chose to extend its strategic partnership with SUSE, using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for SAP Applications to build, test, deploy, and manage its solutions. For its SAP HANA enterprise cloud service, SAP maintains approximately 6,600 servers with over 12,000 CPUs and 16,000 virtual machines running SLES and SLES for SAP Applications. The company also worked closely with SUSE to standardize its IT environment and reduce operating costs by automating more operational processes and increasing the number of virtualized systems. SUSE proved to be an ideal platform for the OpenStack solution, which was crucial to SAP’s data center operations and the more general cloud strategy. SAP also relied on SLES to develop, build, and test its application software. In the joint SAP Linux Lab, the team developed a reliable reference architecture for SAP HANA faster than would have been possible without support from SUSE.
Operational Impact
  • Using SUSE technologies helped SAP to offer extremely high availability on its cloud platform. The company was able to patch servers faster than before and with less downtime, helping SAP to use its resources more efficiently and maximize uptime for customers. SAP is now considering deploying SLE Live Patching to get even closer to zero downtime. With 24/7 availability being critical for so many SAP customers, avoiding downtime while ensuring systems are on the latest patch level would be a great benefit. The strategic partnership between SAP and SUSE has become a highly valuable asset for SAP's business, enabling the company to focus on its core business, instead of solving operating system challenges. By making joint developments available to customers, the partnership with SUSE not only improves how SAP runs, but also reduces operating costs for many thousands of global enterprises.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Achieved 99.999% system availability
  • Reduced total costs of ownership and optimized licensing
  • Streamlined cloud operations and enabled three-figure growth
