The Challenge
Saskatoon Public Schools needed a cost-effective cloud email security upgrade as part of their migration to Microsoft Exchange Online. The existing Secure Email Gateway (SEG) was unable to auto-remediate phishing and internal email account takeover attacks. With a security team of one, responsible for all manual investigations and remediation, the division faced significant challenges in maintaining email security on a limited budget.
About The Customer
Saskatoon Public Schools is the largest school division in Saskatchewan, serving over 25,000 students across 60 schools. The division is known for its diverse and innovative learning programs, including advanced placement coursework, Montessori pedagogy, creative arts, wilderness ecology studies, Indigenous languages and cultures, and apprenticeships. With a mission to inspire academic, personal, and social/cultural growth, the division aims to provide challenging and relevant learning experiences. The division employs 4,200 staff members and is headquartered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
The Solution
During the research phase for a new email security solution, Systems Programmer Peter Mueller attended a webinar where Abnormal clients discussed their transition from a SEG to an API-based email security approach. This led Mueller to explore API-based vendors, with Abnormal standing out due to its ease of implementation and effectiveness. Abnormal's AI-driven Inbound Email Security and Email Account Takeover Protection were implemented to detect and mitigate attacks in real-time. Additionally, Abnormal Email Productivity was integrated with Exchange Online to automate spam and graymail management, learning each user's preferences to accurately quarantine unwanted emails. This automation saved employees the extra step of checking a separate quarantine portal.
Operational Impact
  • Abnormal's AI-driven solutions detect and mitigate phishing and spearphishing attempts in real-time, significantly reducing manual remediation efforts.
  • The automation of spam and graymail management through Abnormal Email Productivity saves employees time and improves overall email productivity.
  • The ease of implementation and integration with Exchange Online allowed for a seamless transition from the existing SEG, enhancing security without additional complexity.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Over 840 hours saved in the past three months due to automated threat remediation and email management.
