The Challenge
The University of Bergamo, a public university in Italy, faced a significant challenge in managing and securing its large, segmented network. The university, home to 25,000 students and 600 staff members, is spread across 20 sites in the city of Bergamo. The challenge was to protect the personal data of all its students and staff across multiple networks, systems, and devices, all managed by a small IT team. Each year, the university welcomes a new class of students who need to be taught how to work within the university’s IT network security policy. The security solution needed to be effective across all these networks and manageable by a small team.
About The Customer
The University of Bergamo is a public university located in the city of Bergamo, northeast of Milan, Italy. Founded in 1968, it is home to 25,000 students and 600 staff members and is spread across 20 sites in the city. The university is ranked among the top 100 young universities worldwide according to Times Higher Education. The university faces unique security challenges due to its dispersed campus and the need to protect the personal data of its large student and staff population.
The Solution
The University of Bergamo has been using Check Point security solutions since 2004 to manage and secure its network. The university uses Check Point integrated Security Gateway Appliances with application control, anti-bot, anti-spyware, and antivirus protections. The solution allows the university to manage all 20 networks and their sub-networks from one centralized point. The university is also evaluating the endpoint solution, Check Point SandBlast Agent, to provide more advanced protection on the network. The most recent upgrade has allowed the university to strengthen its security position without impacting the user experience.
Operational Impact
  • The Check Point solution has significantly improved the efficiency of security management at the University of Bergamo. The university now has a single platform to manage multiple networks, which has streamlined the end-user network experience. The log feature of the firewall allows the university to collect logs and periodically evaluate them, focusing on any particular aspect of the logging to determine whether they can do something more to get the best performance from the gateway. This proactive approach is vital given the high number of network users and the small number of staff charged with ensuring security. The solution has strengthened the university’s security position without impacting the user experience.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The university manages 20 networks and multiple sub-networks from one centralized point.
  • The university has seen fewer security problems since upgrading the old blades of the firewall.
  • The university is able to manage its security with only two staff members.
