The Challenge
Sentara Healthcare faced significant cybersecurity challenges, particularly from ransomware and phishing attacks. Despite having existing security measures like IronPort and Microsoft 365, spoofing emails and spear phishing attempts were still getting through. The organization needed a more robust, cloud-based solution to enhance its email security and reduce the burden on its cybersecurity team.
About The Customer
Sentara Healthcare is a 134-year-old healthcare system operating in Virginia and North Carolina. It serves over 950,000 community members through Sentara Health Plans and operates 12 hospitals. With nearly 30,000 employees, including over 1,300 physicians and advanced practice clinicians, Sentara provides a full range of services at more than 300 sites of care. The organization has received multiple awards for its commitment to care delivery and employee experience, including IBM Watson Health 'Top 15 Health Systems' and Forbes 'Best Employer' awards.
The Solution
Sentara adopted Abnormal, a cloud-based, AI-driven email security solution, to augment its existing security layers. Abnormal demonstrated immediate value by identifying and blocking credential phishing attacks, vendor email compromise, and executive impersonation attacks that had bypassed other security measures. The solution's API-based approach allowed for faster detection and remediation of threats, freeing up resources for other security initiatives. Integration with Siemplify, a cloud-native SOAR solution, further automated responses to threat reports, enhancing the overall security posture.
Operational Impact
  • Abnormal significantly reduced the volume of spam and phishing emails reaching employee inboxes, allowing cybersecurity interns to focus on more critical tasks.
  • The integration with Siemplify enabled faster automated responses to threat reports, improving user satisfaction and reinforcing the organization's security culture.
  • Abnormal's behavior-based detection and auto-remediation capabilities freed up the SOC team from manual spam investigations, allowing them to work on projects like threat hunting and uncovering other indicators of compromise.
Quantitative Benefit
  • In the first eight months of using Abnormal, Sentara avoided more than 700 advanced BEC attacks that bypassed other email security layers.
  • 31,448 spam emails were auto-remediated by Abnormal over the past 90 days.
  • Protected over 48,000 mailboxes with the new security measures.
