The Challenge
Sherwood Companies, a diversified civil construction company, was facing challenges due to the use of multiple estimating systems across its various entities. The systems ranged from complex Excel workbooks and simple Excel spreadsheets, to Lotus and Quattro spreadsheets, to old-fashioned paper and pencil. One company had even purchased a standalone version of HCSS Heavy Bid, but never got it off the ground. The lack of a unified system was causing inefficiencies and complications in the estimating process. Furthermore, Sherwood often bids work for the Kansas and Oklahoma DOT’s, both of which have gone to mandatory electronic bidding, requiring a system that could integrate seamlessly with the DOT required bid files.
About The Customer
Sherwood Companies is a civil construction company with its headquarters in Wichita, Kansas. The company undertakes a wide range of work types including highways, roads, bridges, paving, excavation, grading, concrete, utilities, treatment plants, railroad, and golf courses. Sherwood Companies has been a client of B2W Software since 2010 and has attended four B2W User Conferences. The company operates through several independent entities across Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
The Solution
Sherwood Companies implemented B2W Estimate to standardize their estimating systems across all entities. The software allows all companies to perform estimating from a single server, requiring only a remote desktop connection. Data backups, system updates, and fail-over systems are all performed at one location, but each company has a specific database for its own labor, equipment, crews, and tasks. The concurrent user licensing and security features simplify administration, and with the Enterprise Edition, available user licenses are good across all companies. For bidding work for the Kansas and Oklahoma DOT’s, the B2W import and export features coupled with the DOT databases allow accurate and seamless integration with the DOT required bid files, enabling bid changes to be made up until the last minute.
Operational Impact
  • Simplified estimating process across all entities.
  • Unified system for all companies, reducing the need for individual computer, user-specific software, USB keys, licenses, etc.
  • Centralized data backups, system updates, and fail-over systems.
