The Challenge
SmartWave Technologies, a company that develops, designs, and manufactures electronic and electromechanical systems, faced significant challenges in protecting its intellectual property (IP) and customer data from theft and tampering. The company's unique sensing, verification, and dispensing capabilities often resulted in proprietary and patented designs that required robust protection. The risk of cyberattacks was further heightened due to frequent employee travel to manufacturing facilities in China and Malaysia. These employees were often exposed to threats and data theft attempts via spam email, hotel WiFi networks, email hacking, and stolen devices, often returning home with laptops infected with malware, viruses, and other threats. The company sought a robust endpoint security solution that would fit well with their environment, understand their unique needs, and deliver deep technical and product knowledge.
About The Customer
SmartWave Technologies is a company that develops, designs, and manufactures electronic and electromechanical systems that enable hands-free or autonomic operation. The company’s customers include many Fortune 500 companies that use SmartWave solutions in hands-free soap, air freshener, water faucet, and paper towel systems. SmartWave technology also powers industrial systems such as brake cleaner fluid dispensing, chemical proportion mixing, and flushing systems. Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, SmartWave has manufacturing associates in North America and Asia. Protecting proprietary IP is the company’s security priority.
The Solution
SmartWave Technologies conducted a Proof of Concept (PoC) of Check Point Endpoint Security, using company executives as the test users. This solution enables organizations to secure data at rest, in use, and in transit on corporate laptops and PCs. It provides data security, network security, advanced threat prevention, forensics, and remote access VPN capabilities to defend vital data anywhere it is used. During the PoC, the Check Point team transferred product knowledge, provided security expertise, and helped SmartWave maximize the capabilities of Check Point features. The solution also included Check Point Full Disk Encryption and Media Encryption capabilities, which were critical for securing SmartWave endpoints and encrypting documents copied to removable media. Check Point CloudGuard SaaS was also used to protect SmartWave data by preventing targeted attacks on SaaS applications and cloud-based email.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Check Point Endpoint Security has significantly enhanced SmartWave's ability to protect its IP and customer data. The solution's Full Disk Encryption and Media Encryption capabilities have enabled the company to secure its endpoints and encrypt all documents, making it impossible to open the drive or documents on any endpoint that does not have Check Point Endpoint Security deployed. The company can now set and enforce encryption policy and control device access settings, with device activity and file movement logs stored for centralized auditing and reporting. Check Point SandBlast Agent defends endpoints against zero-day malware, bots, and ransomware, while Check Point CloudGuard SaaS protects data by preventing targeted attacks on SaaS applications and cloud-based email. The centralized management of all endpoints has simplified threat management, providing centralized logging, monitoring, event correlation, and reporting.
