The Challenge
South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) needed an email archiving solution to streamline legal discovery and enforce email retention policies. The IT team, led by David Pfaehler, faced challenges in minimizing manual labor costs and ensuring compliance with legal guidelines. They evaluated several options but found them either too complex, lacking in functionality, or over budget. Open-source solutions were inadequate, and commercial products were not user-friendly.
About The Customer
The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is a state agency established in 1960, reporting directly to the Governor. It employs 6,000 people and manages 23,000 inmates across 27 institutions. The agency's IT infrastructure includes over 2,500 email accounts. David Pfaehler, the Branch Chief of Network and Telecommunications Division, oversees the IT operations, including email management and legal discovery processes.
The Solution
SCDC chose the Barracuda Message Archiver for its ease of use, comprehensive features, and cost-effectiveness. The plug-and-play appliance centrally indexes and stores all emails, providing fast search and retrieval capabilities in a secure environment. It supports compliance with regulations like PCI DSS, HIPAA, and FINRA. The Barracuda Message Archiver was deployed quickly, with immediate benefits in ease of use and organization. It eliminated the risks associated with email retention and termination, making legal discoveries quick and stress-free.

Smart City Public Safety
Amyx+ worked with a local government authority to develop an Internet of Things-enabled public safety strategy. Manual, costly and ineffective, the local agency desired to transition from analog to digital CCTV, apply computer vision and other technologies to automatically detect potential crime in progress, expedite and streamline emergency calls and integrate with personal wearables to ensure the safety of their citizens.
