The Challenge
Specialized Bicycle Components, a leading manufacturer of performance bicycles, was facing constraints in their internal computing resources which were slowing down their product design cycles. The company's R&D teams were experiencing slow solve speeds which were limiting their ability to innovate and create new product designs. The company operates a proprietary wind tunnel for performance testing, but they also employ computer-aided engineering. However, their existing simulation workstations were becoming insufficient for the growing high performance computing needs of their Road Bike R&D team.
About The Customer
Specialized Bicycle Components is a company headquartered in Morgan Hill, California. Founded in 1974, the company is engaged in the engineering and manufacturing of performance bicycles. Specialized is a leader in the hyper-competitive cycling industry and sponsors the top #1 and #2 professional cycling teams in the world. The company's mission is to be the best cycling brand in the world. To achieve this, their R&D teams face pressure to come up with better bicycle shapes and components each year with improved quality and performance.
The Solution
To overcome their internal computing constraints, Specialized adopted Rescale, a high performance computing platform. Rescale provided Specialized with instant access to compute scale and over 600 HPC applications to simulate their bike frames’ drag, weight, and stiffness and overall performance. This enabled their engineers to generate and simulate more iterations of product designs and configurations in less time. The company also used Simcenter STAR-CCM+, a complete CFD multiphysics solution for the simulation of products and designs available on Rescale, to gain a competitive edge in R&D prototyping. Additionally, Specialized leveraged Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its elastic and scalable cloud infrastructure.
Operational Impact
  • Specialized was able to test hundreds more iterations of bicycle frame geometries and material combinations in less time by optimizing their compute resources on Rescale.
  • The R&D team can quickly and easily leverage the most optimal software and hardware options as soon as they come available.
  • This ensures that they always have the innovation capacity, agility, performance, and efficiency they need to continue being a leader of best-in-breed bicycles.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Faster simulation uptime and simulation cycles
  • Improved hardware and software cost and performance
  • Decreased capital expenditure (CapEx)
