The Challenge
Starbucks had been facing issues with securing their restrooms for use by employees and customers. In many locations, the restrooms were being used by non-customers and the homeless for inappropriate activities. The keys for the mechanical keyed restroom locks were often lost or stolen, which required the cylinders to be rekeyed or the locks replaced, as well as any repairs that may have been required for the bathrooms. This made providing a safe and secure restroom facility an expensive and inconvenient proposition for Starbucks in many locations. A couple of years ago, Alarm Locks DL4100 privacy cylindrical lockset was introduced as a solution. However, it did not resolve the issues or provide cost savings to Starbucks due to installation time, visibility issues with the privacy button, and product failure and operator error.
About The Customer
Starbucks Corporation is a multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves headquartered in Seattle, Washington. As the world's largest coffeehouse chain, Starbucks is seen to be the main representation of the United States' second wave of coffee culture. The company operates over 30,000 locations worldwide in more than 70 countries. Starbucks locations serve hot and cold drinks, whole-bean coffee, microground instant coffee known as VIA, espresso, caffe latte, full- and loose-leaf teas including Teavana tea products, Evolution Fresh juices, Frappuccino beverages, La Boulange pastries, and snacks including items such as chips and crackers; some offerings (including their annual fall launch of the Pumpkin Spice Latte) are seasonal or specific to the locality of the store.
The Solution
The solution came in the form of the E-Plex E5051 product. This electronic lock had features such as easy installation, no wires through the door, no time limit on the privacy use, Grade 1 certification with 300 service code capability, which made it the perfect solution for Starbucks' restroom security issues. The E5051 was installed and programmed by a technician from Open Door. The feedback from all decision makers was that it was easy to install, program and use, durable and reliable. The signage on how to engage the privacy operation was redesigned to make it more suitable for high use public facilities where multiple language and maintenance issues had to be addressed. The plan was adopted by Clear Vision with the approval of Starbucks regional office, and the changeover began.
