The Challenge
Suez, a leading French multinational corporation with operations primarily in water, electricity, natural gas supply, and waste management, faced a significant challenge in consolidating data from its various global entities. The company's highly decentralized structure made it difficult to create a global data analytics system, which was crucial for its operations. The inability to integrate customer data from its global business entities and homogenize this data using a unified semantic layer was a major obstacle. The company needed a data integration platform that could overcome the expensive and complex process of physically moving data across varying regulatory boundaries to a central data warehouse.
About The Customer
Suez is a leading French multinational corporation with operations primarily in water, electricity, natural gas supply, and waste management. It is the largest private water provider worldwide, serving 135 million people. As of 2022, Suez has revenue in excess of $20 billion. The company is highly decentralized, with various entities spread across the globe. Despite its size and complexity, Suez is committed to leveraging modern technology and data analytics to improve its operations and services.
The Solution
Suez implemented the Denodo Platform to create a Logical Data Warehouse (LDW) to address its data integration challenges. The LDW enabled Suez to logically integrate data from different entities without the need for physical data movement. Within two years of implementing the LDW, Suez successfully integrated 800 distinct data sets. The LDW connected all types of data systems, including on-premises systems, cloud-based systems, and SaaS applications. The integrated data was made available to five different types of applications, including data visualization/reporting applications, local business applications, data science and machine learning applications, geospatial information systems, and API management applications. This solution enabled Suez to provide data at a faster speed to business data consumers and enable multiple use cases in areas such as waste transportation, commercial loss analysis, and group-level KPI consolidation.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Logical Data Warehouse (LDW) has significantly improved Suez's data integration and analytics capabilities. The LDW has enabled Suez to overcome the challenges posed by its highly decentralized structure and varying regulatory boundaries. The company can now access and analyze data from its global entities in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. This has not only improved the speed at which data is made available to business data consumers but also enabled the company to leverage data science and machine learning applications for various use cases. The LDW has also facilitated the integration of different types of data systems and applications, further enhancing Suez's operational efficiency and decision-making capabilities.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Integrated 800 distinct data sets within two years of implementing the Logical Data Warehouse (LDW)
  • Connected all types of data systems, including on-premises systems, cloud-based systems, and SaaS applications
  • Provided data at a faster speed to business data consumers
