The Challenge
The JOC Group, a provider of global intelligence for trade, transportation, and logistics professionals, was facing a challenge in providing its clients with better Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics to make critical business decisions. As the competitive landscape for data services evolved, decision-makers at JOC Group realized they needed to improve the company’s BI capabilities to preserve market leadership. They examined offerings from several software vendors and chose Information Builders for its complete spectrum of technology and services for data integrity, data integration, and BI.
About The Customer
The JOC Group is the authoritative provider of global intelligence for trade, transportation, and logistics professionals worldwide. Its brands include The Journal of Commerce, PIERS, and a number of directory databases covering the international trade, railroad, and trucking markets. PIERS’ roots reach back to 1827 with the founding of The Journal of Commerce. Headquartered in Newark, New Jersey, PIERS issues trade intelligence reports that are commonly used by its customers to generate sales leads, obtain competitive intelligence, identify buyers and suppliers, conduct market research, and monitor contractual compliance. PIERS gathers raw data from carrier manifests for all waterborne cargo vessels that enter and exit ports in the U.S. Additionally, PIERS staff reporters manually collect export Bills of Lading from each U.S. port not otherwise made available electronically. These import and export records account for 17 million bills of lading collected by PIERS each year.
The Solution
Information Builders Professional Services helped JOC Group develop the initial version of the BI environment and restructure the database. PIERS receives U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data each day in a raw, unstructured format. iWay technology serves as the foundation on which PIERS can implement its proprietary PIERS Six Step Process, allowing the company to structure, standardize, validate, code, calculate, and enhance the data it receives and processes daily from CBP. The WebFOCUS dashboards are embedded in MyPIERS, an enterprise portal that has been deployed to several dozen of the JOC Group’s largest accounts. Authorized users enter the system via a secure HTML page. They can choose reports and interact with the data via parameterized charts and graphs designed for their particular business needs.
Operational Impact
  • Information Builders enhanced raw data with targeted BI to make it more valuable to clients.
  • Clients can obtain competitive insight, conduct market research, generate sales leads, identify buyers, target suppliers, and more.
  • PIERS has deployed client-specific dashboards and reports to 14 of its maritime clients, delivering targeted, interactive trade intelligence that directly impacts their business decisions.
