Swisscom's Journey to Decarbonization: A Case Study

Applicable Industries
  • Equipment & Machinery
  • Telecommunications
Use Cases
  • Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems
  • Inventory Management
The Challenge
Swisscom, the largest telecommunications company in Switzerland, was facing a significant challenge in reducing its carbon footprint. The majority of the company's emissions were not direct but came from the components and devices they purchased from suppliers and manufacturers, known as scope 3 emissions. With a network of over 4,000 suppliers, coordinating efforts to reduce these emissions was a massive task. The challenge was further complicated by the fact that not all suppliers had the same level of carbon literacy or were at the same stage in their climate journey. Collecting data, ensuring its quality, and monitoring emissions in real-time was a daunting task. The use of spreadsheets for these tasks made the process even more difficult and inefficient.
About The Customer
Swisscom is the largest telecommunications provider in Switzerland and Italy, with over 18,000 employees. The company has been recognized as the world's most sustainable telecommunications company by the World Finance Magazine in 2020 and 2022. Swisscom is committed to sustainability and has set ambitious climate goals. They aim to decarbonize across their supply chain by 2025 and go beyond scope 3 by helping their customers set and reach emission targets. However, the company faced challenges in reducing their scope 3 emissions, which come from the components and devices they purchase from suppliers and manufacturers.
The Solution
Swisscom sought a solution that could streamline their carbon management processes. They needed a tool that could automate and coordinate data collection across business units, suppliers, and investments, and optimize carbon reduction efforts. The company chose to use Sweep, a carbon management software. Once they imported their existing carbon data into Sweep, they were able to integrate historical information with new data and transition seamlessly from excel sheets to the software. The software also allowed them to use surveys to automate data collection across their entire organization and value chain. Furthermore, Sweep enabled Swisscom to compare different reduction initiatives to build the most effective decarbonization strategy.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Sweep as a carbon management tool has significantly streamlined Swisscom's carbon management processes. The company has been able to automate and coordinate data collection across various business units, suppliers, and investments. This has not only improved the efficiency of data collection but also the quality of the data collected. The ability to integrate historical information with new data has allowed for a seamless transition from excel sheets to the software. Furthermore, the ability to compare different reduction initiatives has empowered Swisscom to build a more effective decarbonization strategy.
