The Challenge
In early 2020, Stagecoach Group, the United Kingdom’s largest bus and coach operator, was seeking a software provider to help them deliver a reliable and convenient transit option for residents in more isolated communities across Tees Valley, a rural, industrial region in Northeast England. The challenge was to provide a transit solution that could cater to the unique needs of the region, including the ability to serve more rural areas and provide on-demand or pre-booked rides to various destinations, including train stations, hospitals, and the airport.
About The Customer
The customers of Tees Flex are the residents of Tees Valley, a rural, industrial region in Northeast England. These residents were previously underserved by traditional transit options, particularly those living in more isolated communities. The introduction of Tees Flex has provided them with a reliable and convenient transit option, allowing them to travel to various destinations including train stations, hospitals, and the airport. The service has quickly gained popularity among the residents, with more than 11,000 users and 90,000 completed rides.
The Solution
In response to this challenge, Stagecoach Group partnered with Via to launch Tees Flex, an on-demand transit service. The service was launched in three zones: Darlington and Stockton; Hartlepool; and Redcar and Cleveland. Riders can request on-demand or pre-booked rides within the service areas, and travel to destinations outside the designated zones. Booking is available through the Tees Flex app, via a website, or over the phone, and all vehicles are wheelchair accessible. In February 2021, the service was expanded and adjusted in just 24 hours to include the Darlington arena and provide rides to and from this mass vaccination site.
Operational Impact
  • The introduction of Tees Flex has had a significant impact on transit in Tees Valley. The service has not only provided a reliable and convenient transit option for residents in more isolated communities, but it has also helped to reduce the reliance on private vehicles, with 62% of car-owning riders stating that they now use their private vehicle less. This has resulted in 77,000 fewer vehicle miles traveled, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions. Furthermore, the service has demonstrated its flexibility and responsiveness by expanding and adjusting its service in just 24 hours to include the Darlington arena and provide rides to and from this mass vaccination site.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Tees Flex has attracted more than 11,000 users
  • The service has completed over 90,000 rides
  • The service is now averaging over 1,500 rides per week
