The Challenge
In 2009, Brit European faced significant challenges as the global economy headed for recession. The company had a base of fixed costs not tied to activity levels, adding additional pressure. Tough decisions were needed to ensure Brit European remained a successful business. The company embarked on an Environmental Efficiency Project to use equipment design, aerodynamics, technology, staff training, and alternative fuels to drive down environmental impact and operational efficiency. The project aimed to reduce carbon emissions across the fleet by 25% and minimize the intrinsic link to oil prices by using compressed natural gas as a fuel.
About The Customer
Brit European is a transport operator that faced significant challenges during the global recession in 2009. The company had a base of fixed costs not tied to activity levels, adding additional pressure. To remain successful, Brit European embarked on an Environmental Efficiency Project to use equipment design, aerodynamics, technology, staff training, and alternative fuels to drive down environmental impact and operational efficiency. The project aimed to reduce carbon emissions across the fleet by 25% and minimize the intrinsic link to oil prices by using compressed natural gas as a fuel. Telematics played a key role in achieving these objectives.
The Solution
Brit European selected Microlise as its telematics partner after an exhaustive process involving twelve providers. The company initially used the Fleet Performance product to monitor driving standards across its fleet, allowing them to monitor performance over time and direct training resources where it can have the most impact. This approach saves considerable time for both management and drivers. Later, Brit European began using the Journey Management product from Microlise to focus on improving customer service levels and operational efficiency. Journey Management has enhanced operational efficiency by allowing Brit European to compare planned routes versus actual routes, enhancing the planning process over time. The Microlise Scheduled Execution Board provides real-time visibility to the fleet, highlighting any vehicles scheduled to arrive late at their destination, allowing Brit European to provide proactive customer service.
Operational Impact
  • Brit European can monitor driving performance over time, directing training resources where it can have the most impact.
  • The company can manage by exception, only conducting driver debriefs where infringements have occurred, saving considerable time for both management and drivers.
  • Drivers can access their own performance report after a leg, journey, or shift, and see where they rank amongst their peers on a league table.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The Environmental Efficiency Project aims to reduce carbon emissions across the fleet by 25%.
  • In extreme cases, turnaround time has been reduced from two hours to an hour and fifteen minutes.
