The Challenge
Pearson, a leading education company, was facing challenges in monitoring and measuring their training metrics. The Human Resources department was responsible for keeping track of corporate training programs, which included training over 30,000 people via e-learning on critical subjects like plant safety and data security. The existing system of using Access and Excel for reporting was time-consuming and inefficient, taking up to 30% of Martin Keiser's time. The format also made it difficult to identify trends and outliers.
About The Customer
Pearson is one of the world’s leading education companies. As the world’s largest educational publisher, Pearson prints textbooks, workbooks, and other materials for the K-12, higher education, and professional markets. The company's Human Resources department, led by Martin Keiser, is responsible for monitoring and measuring the company's training metrics. This includes training over 30,000 people via e-learning on critical subjects like plant safety and data security. The HR department is also responsible for ensuring that the workforce is meeting or exceeding industry standards.
The Solution
Pearson adopted Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server to monitor, measure, and share their training metrics. Tableau Desktop was initially used due to its ease of use and ability to create reports. The switch from Access and Excel reports to Tableau visualizations was well-received by Martin’s colleagues. Pearson gained important insights from their switch to Tableau by seeing the trend toward usage of online classes, as well as by observing how much training people are getting on average versus industry standards. Pearson HR bought Tableau Server to share the reports Martin was creating in Tableau Desktop. Now Pearson HR uses Tableau Server with a MySQL database. Through Tableau Server, colleagues at Pearson can interact with the data to answer specific questions.
