The Challenge
Trinity Mirror, one of the UK’s largest publishers, had several Nagios® Core installations monitoring their network. However, they wanted to unify these into a single coherent system. The complexity was added when they wanted to implement functionalities such as a single master view of systems with multiple collectors located across data centers, easier management of monitoring system configuration, and long-term storage of historical trend data. The existing system was fragmented and managing it was becoming increasingly challenging and time-consuming.
About The Customer
Trinity Mirror PLC is one of the UK’s largest publishers with five national and 140 regional newspapers and over 400 websites. The company is based in London, UK, and employs between 1,000 to 5,000 employees. Trinity Mirror has an award-winning portfolio of newspapers, websites, and digital products and is one of the UK’s largest multimedia companies, employing over 4300 people across more than 48 locations around the country. The award-winning Trinity Mirror portfolio stretches across England, Scotland, and Wales. These iconic brands sit at the heart of their communities, forming part of the fabric of everyday life for thousands of people across the UK.
The Solution
The solution was to implement the Opsview monitoring system by initially migrating the existing Nagios Core servers to the new system. This approach helped to greatly minimize disruption to Trinity Mirror’s monitoring capability when conducting any task. The additional capabilities that Opsview Enterprise provides over Nagios Core were then implemented. Since Opsview utilizes the Nagios framework, it was possible to use the existing monitoring agents, greatly reducing the amount of effort and time involved. The system was then extended to monitor additional areas of Trinity Mirror’s infrastructure. The ongoing support ensures that Trinity Mirror continues to derive full value from their Opsview system for current projects and beyond.
Operational Impact
  • Opsview delivered a unified monitoring system and greatly reduced the overhead of managing this system.
  • The efficiency of the operations team was improved and the service level of their operations enhanced.
  • The ability to analyze the requirements, design the new system, plan the migration and implement the Opsview software and integrate it into the Nagios Core servers was why Opsview worked as a solution.
