The Challenge
Twiddy & Company, a vacation rental company, was facing challenges in managing access to their properties. The properties, located on or near the beach, endure more wear and tear than homes located inland. The company needed a solution that could withstand climate extremes and meet ANSI A156.25 requirements for dust, humidity, and salt. Additionally, some of the properties are located in very remote areas, making it difficult and time-consuming to manage access control.

Twiddy & Company is a vacation rental company that has been in service for 37 years, specializing in Outer Banks vacation rentals and hospitality. The company has 100 full-time employees and 300 in season. They have restored nine historic structures in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. The company is also environmentally conscious, having saved 500,000 sheets of paper through green initiatives. 94 percent of Twiddy guests recommend the company to a friend.
The Solution
Twiddy & Company implemented the Oracode system, an intelligent, electronic access control system that provides keyless access for temporary users. The system allows the company to generate and distribute lock codes in advance or in a moment’s notice and from anywhere in the world. The Oracode locks are totally sealed to withstand climate extremes and meet ANSI A156.25 requirements for dust, humidity, and salt. In 2014, the company introduced Oracode Live, which provides real-time notifications and alerts, such as Guest First Arrival and Internet Down. Oracode Live also integrates into the BeHome247 energy management system, which allows managers to monitor and control a property’s temperature and lights, adjust pool and spa settings, lights, and pumps, and receive notifications when the HVAC system or appliance is out of service.

Turning A Stadium Into A Smart Building
Honeywell created what it called the “intelligent system” for the National Stadium in Beijing, China, turning the venue for the opening and closing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics into a “smart building.” Designed by highly controversial artist Ai Weiwei, the “Bird’s Nest” remains one of the most impressive feats of stadium architecture in the world. Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.
