5G
- Formal
-
The fifth generation of mobile networks or 5th generation wireless systems denotes the next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G/IMT-Advanced standards, which has speeds beyond what the current 4G can offer.
- Practical
-
In addition to providing simply faster speeds, it can be predicted that 5G networks also will need to meet the needs of new use cases, such as the Internet of Things as well as broadcast-like services and lifeline communication in times of natural disaster. Telecoms giant Huawei and Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo have demonstrated mobile internet speeds of 3.6Gbps in the world's first large-scale public network test of 5G. The field trial was conducted in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China, on 7 October 2015.
