System Autonomy

System autonomy is an ability of an intelligent system to independently compose and select among different courses of action to accomplish goals based on its knowledge and understanding of the world, itself, and the situation.

An example of IT automation in practice might be as simple as the integration of a form into a PDF that is automatically routed to the correct recipients, or as complex as automated provisioning of an offsite backup.
