Securing a Large Data Center in the EMEA Region: An IoT Case Study
Radiflow
A leading data-center operator in the EMEA region, with multiple facilities spanning over 25,000 square meters, faced significant security challenges. The operator experienced interruptions in their internal IT network due to unsupervised work of third-party technicians. Despite having a high-end building control system that provided 24x7 monitoring and control to all the building’s infrastructure, the data center was vulnerable from a cyber perspective as it was connected to the IT network infrastructure. The operator launched an urgent OT cyber security project that included both IT-OT network segmentation and OT network asset mapping and anomaly detection. The main objectives were to harden the security of the server systems, secure the facility’s power supply and server cooling system, strengthen the segmentation between building and operational systems, create a visual OT network map, and set up a system for presenting supply-chain attacks that may threaten the data center through equipment vendors’ maintenance activities.

ThingsSquare | Creating A Way to Measure The Power Consumption of Low Hardware
Thingsquare
The traditional way to measure power consumption of a device is to connect multimeters, oscilloscopes, or specialized power analyzers to the hardware that is to be tested. These tools are slow, difficult to set up, and make it difficult to measure the power consumption for more than a few seconds. Also, they typically require a fair amount of experience with electronics and electrical engineering.

Reducing logistics’ environmental impact by air quality monitoring
Libelium
More than 84% of world trade is mobilized by maritime transport. The integration of land transport with ports has become essential and has had an impact in the complexity of logistics connections. The dynamic nature and importance of maritime transport have repercussions on the environment in the form of noise and air pollution or traffic congestion, among others. Despite the fact that CO2 emissions of container vessels are, comparatively, much lower than air freight emissions, a very large 18,000 TEU container vessel emits 3 grams of CO2 per tonne/kilometer. Recent studies also suggest that maritime transport contributes to 3.5 – 4% of the pollution with sulfur, a highly carcinogenic agent.

For scientists at the City of Lakeland, Florida, manually monitoring lake levels to prevent flooding is a time-consuming, resource-draining task, especially during the nearly four-month rainy season.“Maintaining balanced water levels is critical to avoid flooding in residential areas and conserve enough water for the dry season,” said Laurie Smith, manager of the City of Lakeland’s Lakes and Stormwater Division. “Our technician has to drive back and forth between 11 lakes and make sure the levels don’t get too high.”
Higher Ambient Data Center Temperatures Reduce Costs
Intel
As a pioneering IT enabler and technology driver, Intel’s objective was to demonstrate to clients that the modern data center operating environment does not require the level of cooling traditionally thought necessary to guarantee reliable performance. Given the significant energy cost and capital expense associated with cooling technology, there would be considerable potential for dramatically reducing TCO by designing and building data center facilities that run at a higher ambient temperature.Demonstrating the validity of this approach required an accurate and straightforward way to scientifically prove how TCO could be reduced without business risk or compromising IT performance. Intel needed a dependable solution that would rapidly allow a detailed assessment of the entire data center environment under varying workloads and conditions, holistically and at an individual component level.
Modular AI Defect Inspection Solution for Efficient Semiconductor Equipment Upgrades
Advantech
Smasoft Technology Co., Ltd., a System Integrator that develops industrial automation software and offers AI application solutions, was commissioned by a semiconductor equipment manufacturer to implement AI inspection features into their Extreme Ultraviolet Light (EUV) pod inspection machines. The existing AOI software in the EUV pod inspection machines could only identify defective products but could not trace the cause of the defects. The manufacturer wanted to upgrade their machines with AI features to make the products more useful. The AI solution needed to complete the analysis of 380 images for a single pod within two minutes and inspect different materials simultaneously. This required multiple sets of AI models for interpretation. The solution also needed to be installed in a cabinet in the lower half of the machines, which posed a challenge due to the limited space. Smasoft needed to purchase a hardware solution with strong computing performance, stable operation, compact size, and flexible configuration to overcome these challenges.
