The Challenge
One of NEWLOG Consulting’s clients wanted to launch a new tracking and tracing system in one month. The client wanted to grow into new markets by transforming into a fully fledged express delivery operation that offered value-added logistics services. The client wanted to bring the new solution to market as soon as possible, and set a goal to go live with an initial release in one month. With no time or budget for a traditional development approach, NEWLOG Consulting needed a platform that it could use to rapidly develop and deploy the new system.
About The Customer
Headquartered in Monza, Italy, NEWLOG Consulting is a software development and consulting company. It specializes in developing advanced logistics and distribution systems for the industrial sector. As supply chains grow more global and complex, involving multiple touchpoints and carriers, keeping track of products throughout their journey has become critically important. If companies cannot see exactly where an individual item is, it can cause delays or errors that lead to increased costs, missed deadlines and poor customer satisfaction.
The Solution
To drive the rapid deployment that its client demanded, NEWLOG Consulting turned to IBM Cloud Data Services, which delivers fully managed data and analytic services on the IBM Bluemix® cloud platform. Taking advantage of a range of open-source technologies, tools and services—available on a pay-as-you-go basis—NEWLOG Consulting successfully delivered an initial release of the tracking and tracing system. The tracking and tracing system uses information provided by carriers to track the location shipments. Depending on the level of information provided, the system can provide detailed tracking, right down to individual item level. Using the Cloudant® on IBM Bluemix database service, the client stores all incoming information from the external systems of logistics carriers, including extended descriptions of individual shipping items.
Operational Impact
  • The tracking and tracing solution has shed new light on every link in our client’s supply chain. With near-real-time status reporting, they can track individual items, packages and entire shipments throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • With the tracking and tracing system driving newfound visibility and control of its supply chain, the client has laid a solid foundation for its strategic transformation, and is taking steps towards becoming a fully fledged express delivery provider.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 70% faster delivery for custom orders
  • 35% more accurate prediction of anticipated delivery time
