The Challenge
The American Nurses Association (ANA), an organization advocating for four million registered nurses and their patients across the United States, was facing a challenge with its Azure environment. The costs were escalating, and the organization was unable to identify the factors driving this increase. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread, ANA needed to quickly transition over 250 employees to a remote workforce. This situation required a strategic partner to help manage, navigate, and optimize Microsoft Azure usage for ANA’s 400 employees. ANA also needed to enhance its security posture to prevent attacks on systems and data, especially with the shift to remote work.
About The Customer
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is part of the American Nurses Association Enterprise (ANAE), a family of organizations that advocate for, credential, and educate registered nurses and their patients across the United States. With a mission to transform the nation’s health through the power of nursing, ANA advocates for four million registered nurses across the United States. The organization has around 400 employees and was facing challenges in managing and optimizing its Azure environment, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which necessitated a rapid shift to remote work.
The Solution
ANA engaged Catapult Systems in a strategic partnership to manage and optimize its Azure environment, focusing on security, operations, and spending. Catapult Systems assessed the current costs, consulted with ANA to understand its business goals, and established an Azure spending budget. They created dashboards in ANA’s Azure Portal to provide trending cost data and highlight changes in cost that could result in unplanned spending. Catapult Systems also helped ANA transition 250 employees to work from home, supported by Azure-based infrastructure. To gain full visibility and understanding of the Azure environment, ANA leveraged Catapult’s Azure Management Services (AMS) and EverWatch, Catapult’s proprietary Azure monitoring and alerting tool. Catapult also provided ANA’s IT team with detailed reporting and regular recommendations, leading to a more robust change management strategy.
Operational Impact
  • The partnership with Catapult Systems resulted in significant operational improvements for ANA. The organization was able to quickly transition to a remote workforce without increasing costs, thanks to the predictable monthly spending facilitated by Catapult. ANA also gained increased insight into the usage of applications, infrastructure, and network services, helping to keep its Azure environment healthy and optimized. Most issues were proactively identified and prevented, and unexpected issues were responded to and investigated in minutes. The enhanced security measures provided by Catapult gave ANA’s home-based workforce the security they needed to efficiently focus on supporting nurses during the pandemic.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Cut Azure costs by 30 percent
  • Increased security score by 38 percent
