The Challenge
In the spring of 2010, the University’s Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) department began researching remote support solutions for a University-wide project to migrate separately hosted email and calendar applications into a single Microsoft cloud-based solution. The EITS department team, including IT professional specialist Rachel Moorehead, considered a number of possible options for remote support but soon turned its attention to Bomgar when they learned other departments were already using it across campus. One of the University’s top priorities was having the ability to support a wide variety of devices. “We don’t standardize any of the devices used on campus, even with faculty and staff, because we don’t want to do anything that would inhibit creativity. So we have Apple, Linux, and Windows machines, as well as all the new mobile phones and tablets with iOS and Android operating systems,” said Moorehead. With over 100,000 email accounts at the University, the EITS team knew the migration project would require a remote support solution to get everyone’s desktop and mobile devices set up.
About The Customer
The University of Georgia is the state of Georgia’s oldest, most comprehensive and diversified institution of higher education. Its motto, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things,” reflects the University’s unique role in the conservation and enhancement of the intellectual, cultural, and environmental heritage of the state and nation. With a main campus in Athens, approximately 60 miles from Atlanta, and several extended campuses around the state, the University has more than 34,000 undergraduate and graduate/professional students as well as nearly 10,000 employees.
The Solution
The University of Georgia's Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) department turned to Bomgar for a remote support solution. Bomgar impressed the EITS team with its ability to support a wide range of devices, including Apple, Linux, and Windows machines, as well as mobile phones and tablets with iOS and Android operating systems. Bomgar's security features also set it apart from other solutions. The University was able to host Bomgar's physical appliance within its secure network on campus and easily integrate it into the University’s existing LDAP user authentication system. Bomgar also makes it possible to log and record each session, providing an automated audit trail. The University is considering an upgrade to enterprise licensing, which would allow them to completely virtualize their environment for Bomgar, exchanging the physical Bomgar appliance for a virtual one. This would give them the flexibility to easily move or add portals as needed, without assistance from Bomgar.
Operational Impact
  • Bomgar has helped the University build rapport with its client base, now having the ability to engage with them in a true one-on-one way.
  • The users feel that the University is personalizing their assistance even though they are helping them remotely.
  • The University's IT department can use Bomgar to identify any issues during the implementation of future technology systems and to provide the administrative staff with hands-on instruction on how to use the new system.
