The Challenge
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, a non-profit organization, was facing challenges in managing its database of children and volunteers involved in the program. The organization's impact on children's lives is directly related to how effectively it pairs 'Littles' and 'Bigs'. Each match is carefully selected based on a number of factors, including age, interests, and geography, among others. However, with the growing number of children and mentors involved in the program, it was essential for the organization to manage its database efficiently and successfully. Furthermore, as a non-profit organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America relies heavily on private and government funding from various donors from all over the country. Therefore, it was crucial for the organization to prove to its donors through hard numbers and data that its method of delivering one-to-one mentoring is both effective and achieving statistically-proven outcomes.
About The Customer
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is a non-profit organization that has been operating for over 100 years. The organization believes that every child has the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation's largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network, its mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The organization partners with parents and guardians, schools, corporations, and others in the community to carefully pair children ('Littles') with screened volunteer mentors ('Bigs') and monitors and supports them in one-to-one mentoring matches. The organization is committed to achieving measurable outcomes in the lives of children in the program, such as higher aspirations, greater confidence, better relationship-building skills, educational success, and avoidance of delinquency and other risky behaviors. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has a network of about 350 local agencies across the country and serves nearly 630,000 children, volunteer mentors, and families.
The Solution
To address its challenges, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America turned to Business & Decision, an international consulting and systems integration company and leader in the business intelligence (BI) space. The company, a long-time partner of QlikView, a leading provider of Business Discovery – user-driven Business Intelligence – solutions, began working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to build out various applications that could put all of the organization's data in a centralized source where information could easily be accessed. QlikView was deployed to approximately 50 individuals at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America's national office. These individuals included account representatives and managers, responsible for coaching local agencies and ensuring they have what they need to succeed in the very important social service Big Brothers Big Sisters provides. Within a very short period of time, the organization began to feel the benefits of using QlikView.
Operational Impact
  • QlikView immediately made employees more effective. The time that was spent putting together Excel documents and reports morphed into time spent taking a closer look at the data and making decisions to better the organization.
  • Employees began spending more time seeking out potential donors and identifying opportunities for local agencies in specific areas of the country.
  • QlikView has helped Big Brothers Big Sisters of America deliver an effective and impactful program to children. The program's success is measured by children's growth and development; therefore it is essential that Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has the tools needed to carry out its mission.
