The Challenge
Boston Scientific, a global provider of medical devices and innovative medical solutions, faced a challenge in enabling rapid digital experiments for hospital clients. The company's Healthcare Solutions & Partnerships (HS&P) team identified a recurring problem where physicians failed to review up to 90% of patients who could have benefited from a heart procedure called 'LAAC' (Left Atrial Appendage Closure). The lengthy process of reviewing patients' clinical history led to repeated readmissions. The team hypothesized that an algorithm could use patient data to flag patients who might need the LAAC treatment and streamline the tasks, communications, and collaboration needed for a multidisciplinary physician team to diagnose and treat patients. However, previous digital experiments had suffered from slow and hard-to-change coding and restrictions from third-party, white-labeled software.
About The Customer
Boston Scientific is a worldwide provider of medical devices and innovative medical solutions that improve the health of patients around the world. Established in 1979, the company has over 36,000 employees and around 10 billion USD in revenue. The company's Healthcare Solutions & Partnerships team invents and brings to market innovative healthcare solutions that address unmet patient needs and reduce the cost of healthcare. The team works in long-term partnerships with customers to develop solutions that are differentiated and tailored to their needs.
The Solution
Boston Scientific turned to OutSystems and delivery partner Devoteam to develop Clearpath, a product that supports patients' clinical history review, care, and monitoring through complex pathways. After researching the low-code market and experimenting with a free OutSystems personal environment, Cristian Toader, a digital solutions manager at Boston Scientific, saw the potential that OutSystems could provide. A project team built a demonstratable MVP of Clearpath, which includes flexible integration to connect to various hospital management systems, workflow and case management features to streamline collaboration, and UI/UX design to ensure that Clearpath is easy to use and presents tasks and data that healthcare professionals can understand and trust. The development was iterative, with regular demonstrations to customers and potential users to refine the solution.
Operational Impact
  • Clearpath has been likened to a SatNav for multidisciplinary hospital teams, guiding the patient's journey and helping teams collaborate more quickly, cost-efficiently, and safely. It collects all information, tasks, and communication around the patient's case record, making the status and next step easy to see throughout the workflow. This eliminates the manual effort and delays caused by emails. Feedback from hospital trials shows that Clearpath is on track to be a success. The HS&P team can quickly configure and integrate the solution for different hospitals and therapies. As the product moves into scaled deployment, Boston Scientific will explore many other therapeutical uses for Clearpath.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Clearpath improves care coordination between multidisciplinary teams
  • Clearpath saves time spent on patient analysis and triage
  • Clearpath is easy to use
