The Challenge
Travelbasys, a leader in the European travel software market, faced challenges due to the growing industry transition to the web and increasing competition from startups. The company's core system, RBS, was based on a mainframe architecture, which was becoming outdated as the travel business moved to the cloud. A new generation of travel agents, developers, and customers were unfamiliar with host-based systems. The task for travelbasys was to transition to the web, compete in a newly lean and connected travel market—and do it without compromising 40 years-worth of process, data and customer investments.
About The Customer
Travelbasys has been at the forefront of the travel industry for over 40 years and an early adopter of data automation. Their core Adabas & Natural system (called RBS) is the industry standard for linking reservation processes with accounting, CRM and archiving, and handles over 2 million travel booking transactions a day, worth €9 billion annually. The company is a leader in Europe, with over 80% of the German market alone. However, changes in recent years have seen the travel business move to the cloud, and unless travelbasys could free themselves from their mainframe architecture – they weren’t going to keep up.
The Solution
Travelbasys partnered with Software AG to manage the transition from mainframe to web. In just four months, developers used NaturalONE and EntireX to create a web interface reaching into the Natural & Adabas backend. And in the next eight months, 43,000 software objects were transferred to Eclipse™. This meant moving from a 3270-based mainframe to a web application—without having to change source code. Travel agents no longer had to learn the old green-screen, and new hires, already versed in Eclipse™ by graduation, were able to inject fresh energy from their first days on the job. With IT costs reduced through the consolidation of infrastructure, travelbasys embarked on the next steps to optimize, modernize, and transform their use of Adabas & Natural.
