The Challenge
Carlsberg UK, a subsidiary of the Carlsberg Group and the UK’s fourth largest brewer, was in need of a web-based Monitoring & Targeting (M&T) System for multiple plants and distribution depots throughout the UK. The brewery sought a system that could import and calculate weekly KPI data against targets for multiple utilities including gas, water, and electricity. It also needed to analyze production data and calculate plant efficiency. The system had to manage data imports from a wide range of meters to incorporate complex production procedures in place across the brewing process and be intuitive for non-technical users. Additionally, Carlsberg UK required an energy solution to distribute a range of use alarms and average usage alarms automatically via email and display hourly dashboards at the department operator level to monitor usage during different operational states.

About The Customer
Carlsberg UK is a subsidiary of the Carlsberg Group, a household name in the United Kingdom and Europe with over 150 years of Danish heritage. As the UK’s fourth largest brewer, Carlsberg UK employs around 1,800 staff across 16 sites in the UK. The company was in need of a comprehensive energy management solution that could handle the complexity of their brewing process, manage data from a wide range of meters, and provide intuitive access for non-technical users. The solution also needed to provide real-time alerts and dashboards to monitor energy usage during different operational states.
The Solution
Carlsberg UK selected MRI Software to manage energy usage throughout the brewing process. The MRI eSight system enabled them to monitor the efficiency of their brewing processes and optimize for best performance, thus saving on bottom line costs. The system was used to monitor the plant for shutdown opportunities and generate range and average alarms to be sent via email to alert high usage in specific meters. The alarms were linked to production allowing for early reaction and quick intervention times to process and reduce losses. The MRI eSight system was managed by the Carlsberg UK onsite systems team and coordinated and facilitated to user departments by the Energy Center Manager & the Water and Effluent Continuous Improvement Manager. Carlsberg UK held a weekly meeting with user departments to review MRI eSight dashboards and compare the weekly KPI data to targets, allowing for changes to enhance productivity and achieve energy savings.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of MRI eSight has led to significant operational improvements for Carlsberg UK. The system has enabled the company to understand consumption loads and match them with production periods, leading to a reduction in overall energy usage. The use of MRI eSight has also allowed Carlsberg UK to utilize the CHP plant and recover heat by matching to process demands, improving the recovered energy from the brewing process. The MRI eSight suite is used as the primary measure at the production level, focusing on software and plant improvements. As a result, Carlsberg UK has experienced continuous improvement toward their root cause analysis. The MRI eSight Dashboard module has also been instrumental in highlighting areas of performance that are most important to the company.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced overall energy consumption by 10%
  • Improved recovered energy from brewing process which uses 60% of site usage
  • Reduced site water consumption by 10%
