The Challenge
DeNA, a Japanese corporation specializing in digital portals, mobile games, and e-commerce platforms, was facing significant challenges with its legacy Web Application Firewall (WAF). The legacy WAF was not only expensive to operate but also had high response times, particularly during traffic spikes. This was a significant issue as DeNA was expanding its offerings and needed to scale its web security posture accordingly. The legacy WAF's admin portal loaded slowly during traffic spikes, preventing the team from addressing issues promptly. Moreover, it was impossible for the DeNA team to reroute customer page requests if their WAF was not performing correctly. The performance issues, coupled with the high cost of scaling hardware investments, made it clear that DeNA needed a new, more efficient solution.

The need for a more efficient solution led DeNA to Fastly's Next-Gen WAF.
The Solution
Fastly provided DeNA with a scalable performance and centralized visibility solution that their legacy hardware WAF could not offer. DeNA deployed Fastly's Next-Gen WAF across five of its properties and saw performance improvements after an easy installation. This solution allowed DeNA to reduce their operational expenses as they no longer needed engineers dedicated to costly rules or policy tuning necessary for a traditional WAF. Fastly was also more cost-efficient to scale with their business than their previous hardware WAF. Unlike DeNA's legacy WAF that relied on static regex pattern matching rules, Fastly's Next-Gen WAF provides a better, more innovative approach to detecting and blocking potential attacks. It leverages known-bad IP lists to compliment its proprietary SmartParse technology and make fast, inline blocking decisions. Fastly's Next-Gen WAF also enriches decisioning with its Network Learning Exchange to further evaluate web requests' source IP reputation.
