The Challenge
E.ON, a leading power and gas company in the UK, was facing economic challenges due to high gas prices, low power demand, and low power sale prices. Many gas-fired combined cycle power plants in Europe, including those operated by E.ON, were unable to be economically dispatched. These plants, which previously ran for over 4,000 hours per year, were now seeing fewer than 1,000 hours of profitable operation. This was often only possible in real-time power markets and only when spark spreads were high, such as when intermittent renewable power (like wind) needed to be quickly replaced. To operate successfully in this time-sensitive environment, E.ON needed combined cycle plant starts that were fast, reliable, and low-cost, similar to what is possible with simple cycle plants.
About The Customer
E.ON is one of the UK’s leading power and gas companies. It is involved in generating electricity and retailing power and gas. The company operates several gas-fired combined cycle power plants in Europe. However, due to high gas prices, low power demand, and low power sale prices, many of these plants are unable to be economically dispatched. This has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of profitable operating hours for these plants.
The Solution
In response to this challenge, GE partnered with E.ON to develop an advanced controls technology retrofit package that enables agile and robust combined cycle starts. This package consists of GE’s Variable Load Path (VLP) solution, which enables GT load and exhaust conditions to be customized to best match bottoming cycle needs, and the GE AutoTune MX solution, which provides fully automated combustor tuning to ensure robust GT operation across the full load range and whole VLP operating space. This solution was designed to increase the speed and reduce the cost of combined cycle plant starts, making them more competitive with simple cycle plants.
Operational Impact
  • E.ON was able to demonstrate 40% faster and 50% less costly combined cycle plant starts.
  • The solution resulted in up to 60% more operating hours and starts compared to non-upgraded plants.
  • The solution has been proven in operation on more than 10 units at 5 different sites since 2013.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 40% faster combined cycle plant starts
  • 50% less costly combined cycle starts
  • 60% more operating hours and starts over plant without Operations Optimization solution
