The Challenge
ENGIE, the world's largest power producer, was faced with the challenge of implementing an enterprise-wide digital transformation and establishing a center for IoT excellence. This transformation was to span across various sectors including customer service, metering, energy management, and maintenance. The project was to be implemented across 24 business units in 70 countries, requiring a significant staffing investment. The first applications to be developed and deployed on the ENGIE digital platform included performance optimization for gas power plants, efficiency optimization of heating and cooling plants, energy analysis and management for enterprise and consumer customers, and anomaly detection of wind turbines.

ENGIE

About The Customer
ENGIE is the largest power producer in the world with a power-production capacity of 114.4GW and an annual revenue of €67 Billion. The company has a workforce of 153K employees and operates in 70 countries. ENGIE is also the number one supplier of energy efficiency services in the world. The company works across five lines of business and collaborates with C3 AI on a roadmap for business and residential solutions, decentralized solutions for cities and territories, gas operations, and electricity production.
The Solution
ENGIE chose the C3 AI Platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create and implement their digital transformation platform. To undertake this massive project, ENGIE and C3 AI trained over 70 employees, including more than 20 data scientists, on the C3 AI Platform. They established a center of excellence (CoE) comprised of over 30 personnel working on applications and servicing the business. ENGIE also established a Digital Factory with a staff of 100 experts to propagate technologies and expertise worldwide. To connect to the diverse devices ENGIE uses in operations, the C3 AI Platform provides support for a variety of device interfaces such as SigFox, DCS, EtaPRO, SCADA, Linky, and AWS IoT Core.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the C3 AI Platform on AWS has enabled ENGIE to undertake a comprehensive digital transformation across its operations. The establishment of a center of excellence and a Digital Factory has facilitated the propagation of technologies and expertise worldwide. The training of over 70 employees on the C3 AI Platform has built a strong foundation for the company's digital transformation journey. The platform's support for a variety of device interfaces has allowed ENGIE to connect to the diverse devices used in its operations, enhancing efficiency and operational effectiveness.
Quantitative Benefit
  • €1.5 billion in estimated annual economic benefit
  • Data ingestion from over 1 million connected devices at intervals ranging from every 1 to 15 minutes
  • The number of connected devices is projected to grow to more than 5.5 million devices by 2020
