The Challenge
Leica Geosystems, a company with a 200-year history, faced a significant challenge when it launched its SmartNet business in 2010. The company had to transition from a traditional sales business model to a subscription business model, which was a radical shift. The new business model required a network of GPS receivers throughout North America, with data from these receivers being streamed back to central servers and accessed by users in real time on a subscription basis. This presented numerous challenges, including the need to scale quickly and easily, limited in-house VMware knowledge, and the need for equipment that was available 24x7. The company also faced challenges with expansion, as every time they needed to purchase additional servers or software, they had to put in a fixed asset request which slowed the process down.
About The Customer
Leica Geosystems North America is a geospatial intelligence company based in Atlanta, Georgia with regional offices throughout the United States. The company has been supporting customers globally for over 200 years, providing products for precision alignment. Leica Geosystems’ customers range from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies that use its products for precise measurement as the basis for actionable geospatial intelligence. The company prides itself on its customer service and quality, which it believes sets it apart from its competition. In 2010, Leica Geosystems launched its SmartNet business, a software-as-a-service business that provides high-precision, high-availability Network RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) corrections for any application, using any constellation, while simultaneously being open to all.
The Solution
To overcome the challenges, Leica Geosystems decided to lease IT infrastructure and let someone else worry about the assets, software updates, and ensuring access to SmartNet’s 24x7 network. After conducting a rigorous interview process with several vendors, the company chose 11:11 Systems for its full virtual machine environment that currently hosts approximately 60 servers. The system works by streaming data second-by-second from 600 real-time sites spread across North America. The data is processed and then re-provisioned as a correction service to customers in the field that need precision GPS applications. The company also appreciated 11:11 Systems' extensive knowledge of VMware, which played a key role in their decision to opt for the cloud provider.
Operational Impact
  • Leica Geosystems' SmartNet team can now scale as needed without worrying about acquiring more fixed assets.
  • The team no longer faces the bottlenecks and performance issues incurred by having to spool up, configure, and rework a new server as was the case in a traditional environment.
  • Now the team can simply add or reallocate resources based on bandwidth and the needs of Leica Geosystems’ customers.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Over three years, SmartNet has grown in size, scope, scale and sales by more than 300%.
  • The number of stations increased from 200 to over 600.
  • The number of servers increased from around 20 to 60.
