The Challenge
Gigantic Studios, a renowned post-production house in New York City, faced the challenge of providing a comprehensive range of post-production services, from offline edit suites to sound design, final mix, color grading, and DCP creation to New York’s most respected filmmakers. The studio aimed to create a state-of-the-art facility that could accommodate both sound mixing and color correction in a single room. The challenge was to design a room that could seamlessly transition between these two functions without obstructing the view of the screen for both editors and clients. Furthermore, the studio wanted to incorporate a unique feature that would allow a re-recording mixer to stand up at the console without impacting the sight lines of the producer’s desk.
About The Customer
Gigantic Studios is an award-winning post-production house based in New York City. The studio was founded in 2006 by Tom Paul, a two-time Emmy® Award-winning re-recording mixer and sound designer, and Brian Devine, a co-founder of Gigantic Studios and the maverick behind Gigantic Pictures. The studio is one of New York’s most in-demand teams in the post-production field, boasting three mixing stages, a Foley room, an ADR room, a DI theater, color grading suite, five editing rooms, a machine room, offices, in-house post supervision, and a massive sound library. Over the years, Paul has accumulated numerous credits, including supervising and mixing sound for The Big Sick, City of Ghosts, Cartel Land, The Square, Particle Fever, and The Wolfpack.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Gigantic Studios relied on Pro Tools | S6 to create a complete, efficient, and affordable foundation for full-service post-production picture and sound. The studio built a dual-purpose room equipped with two Avid Pro Tools | S6 consoles. The floor of this room was designed to slide away to reveal a pit, allowing an unobstructed view of the screen to both editors and clients. When the room is in sound mixing mode, it serves as a dual-operator 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos® cinema mixing studio. The studio also incorporated a unique feature inspired by Walter Murch, allowing a re-recording mixer to stand up at the console without impacting the sight lines of the producer’s desk.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Pro Tools | S6 consoles has revolutionized the operations at Gigantic Studios. The dual-purpose room has enabled the studio to efficiently transition between sound mixing and color correction, enhancing the overall productivity. The unique feature of allowing a re-recording mixer to stand up at the console has brought a new element of physicality and body involvement to the mixing process, making it more energizing. The studio has been able to streamline its operations and offer a great experience to independent filmmakers, thanks to the digital revolution and the tools available.
