The Challenge
The hospital was facing a challenge of protecting its sensitive data from human-based vulnerabilities, especially from social engineering attempts. The hospital's employees, dedicated to serving their patients, could be exploited by hackers seeking financial gain. The sensitive information stored by the hospital, such as patient personal data, physician credentials, and Drug Enforcement Agency license numbers, could be used by hackers to create fake identities, pose as a medical professional online, or even file fraudulent insurance claims. The hospital needed a cybersecurity solution that could address human vulnerability without impacting the ability to provide care for its patients.
About The Customer
The customer is a 200-bed acute care hospital facility that serves patients in several counties across Mississippi and Tennessee. The hospital is committed to achieving patient satisfaction and is one of its top priorities. The hospital's employees are dedicated to serving their patients and the surrounding community. However, their commitment to serving patients can also be exploited, as hackers attempt to steal valuable medical data for their own financial gain. The hospital needed a holistic solution to safeguard sensitive and protected information by protecting against costly human-based vulnerabilities.
The Solution
To address the challenge, the hospital implemented a solution from Forcepoint that unified web and email protection with data loss prevention. This solution was able to block malware, risky content, spam, and phishing attempts, while increasing data visibility as it moves on and off the network. The suite of Forcepoint products is highly customizable, so policies can be fine-tuned to work most effectively for the organization. The solution also provided opportunities to educate employees on proper security practices. The hospital's security team further customized the Email Security solution to block mail from all foreign servers. Forcepoint DLP ties into both Web and Email Security to provide an extra layer of data protection.
Operational Impact
  • The hospital was able to block 87% of all email as spam before it could enter users' mailboxes, saving staff valuable time.
  • The hospital was able to avoid a malware infection that affected several peer institutions.
  • The hospital's staff are less likely to fall for social engineering attempts, better protecting data and systems.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 87% reduction in email volume just based on spam blocking.
